Know the route before the application

A funding application is stronger when the purpose, amount, timing and repayment route are clear.

This does not mean every document needs to be perfect before a conversation starts, but it helps to understand what lenders are likely to ask.

Understand costs and conditions

Commercial finance can include interest, arrangement fees, valuation costs, legal costs, monitoring fees or other charges.

Applicants should ask how costs are structured and what conditions need to be met before funds are released.

Think carefully about security

Some facilities may require property, assets, debentures or personal guarantees. The implications should be explained before proceeding.

Independent legal, tax or financial advice may be appropriate depending on the circumstances.

Ask what could delay completion

Delays often come from missing documents, valuation questions, legal points or unclear explanations of the funding purpose.

A prepared case does not guarantee funding, but it can reduce avoidable back-and-forth.

Talk through what this means for your funding requirement.
